About NGO Registration

A non-governmental organisation (NGO) is one that runs independently without interference from the government. An NGO is usually established with the purpose of addressing a social or political issue.  The first step in establishing an NGO is determining what issue to combat. It could be human rights violations, environmental pollution or poverty.

The mission and vision of the NGO must be identified.  Before registering the NGO, a promoters' body must be in place that will be the first governing body on registration, and thereby responsible for all activities and decisions of the NGO, till the new body is constituted as per the laid down rules. Every NGO in India is legally required to document a trust deed, Memorandum of Association or Rules & Regulations that contain the name and address of the NGO, mission and objectives, details of governanace of the NGO.

In India, an NGO can be resisted under either the Societies Registration Act, 1860 or the Companies Act, 2013.  Finally, funds for the NGO must be raised through internal sources such as membership fees, sales, subscription charges, donations or grants-in-aid from the Government, private organizations or foreign sources.
